Why all-wheel drive changes how your car gets towed

Most people picture a tow the same way: a truck lifts the front of the car, the back wheels stay on the ground, and off it goes. That works fine for a lot of ordinary front-wheel-drive sedans. For an all-wheel-drive crossover or a four-wheel-drive truck, the same hook-up can quietly do expensive damage before the vehicle ever reaches the shop.

The reason comes down to how power moves through these vehicles. On an AWD or 4x4, the drivetrain ties the front and rear wheels together through a transfer case, a center differential, or a coupling that expects all four wheels to turn at matching speeds. When two wheels are lifted and two are rolling down the highway, those spinning wheels feed motion back into a system that was never meant to run that way while the engine is off and the transmission isn't circulating fluid.

What can go wrong when the wrong wheels keep spinning

When an all-wheel-drive vehicle is towed with one axle rolling on the pavement, the turning wheels drive the drivetrain components without the lubrication the vehicle normally provides when it's running. Heat builds in the transfer case and differentials, seals can suffer, and the coupling that manages power between the axles takes strain it wasn't designed for at towing speed over long distances.

The frustrating part is that the damage often doesn't show up right away. The car reaches its destination looking fine, and the trouble surfaces weeks later as a whine from the drivetrain, a leak, or an all-wheel-drive system that no longer behaves the way it should. By then it's hard to connect the problem back to how the car was moved, and the repair can cost far more than the tow ever did.

Four-wheel-drive trucks and SUVs have their own version of this. Many can be moved safely only when the transfer case is shifted into a true neutral position, and getting there isn't always as simple as putting the shifter in N. Skip that step and the same overheating and wear apply.

Flatbed is usually the safe answer

The cleanest way to move an all-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive vehicle is on a flatbed, also called a rollback. All four wheels sit on the deck, nothing rotates against the road, and the drivetrain gets to stay still for the whole trip. For AWD vehicles in particular, a flatbed is the option most owner's manuals point to, because it removes the question of which wheels can safely roll.

If you own an all-wheel-drive vehicle, it's worth checking the towing section of your owner's manual before you ever need a tow. Manufacturers spell out how their specific system should be moved, and that guidance beats any general rule of thumb. Some brands are strict that only a flatbed is acceptable. Others allow limited exceptions under narrow conditions.

When a wheel-lift can still work

A wheel-lift truck, the kind that cradles two wheels and rolls on the other two, isn't automatically off the table, but it usually needs extra equipment to be safe for AWD. Operators can place the remaining wheels on dollies, small platforms that let those wheels ride along without turning the drivetrain. Done correctly, that keeps all four wheels from feeding motion into the system.

The catch is that dollies take more time to set up, and not every truck that shows up will have them or the room to use them. For a short move at low speed, some four-wheel-drive vehicles can also be pulled with the transfer case in neutral, but this depends entirely on the vehicle, and guessing wrong is what causes the damage in the first place. When there's any doubt, a flatbed sidesteps the whole problem.

What to tell the dispatcher when you call

The single most useful thing you can do is say up front that the vehicle is all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Dispatchers send different equipment for different jobs, and a company that knows it needs a flatbed can send one instead of showing up with a truck that can't do the job safely. Mention the make and model too, along with anything unusual like low ground clearance or a vehicle that won't shift out of park because it has no power.

If you're not sure what drivetrain you have, the owner's manual, the window sticker, or a quick look for an AWD or 4WD badge usually settles it. A good towing company would rather answer that question on the phone than discover the surprise in your driveway.

Before the truck arrives

While you wait, pull anything valuable out of the vehicle and note where it's parked in relation to obstacles the driver will need to work around. If the manual is in the glovebox, keep it handy so you can point to the towing instructions if a question comes up. And if the operator arrives ready to lift the car by two wheels with nothing under the others, it's completely reasonable to ask how they plan to protect the drivetrain. A towing company that works on all-wheel-drive vehicles regularly will have a clear answer.

The bottom line

All-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles reward you with grip in bad conditions, and that same connected drivetrain is exactly why they need more care on a tow. A flatbed keeps every wheel off the road and takes the guesswork out. When you call, name the drivetrain early, follow what your owner's manual says, and let the company bring the right truck. It's a small bit of planning that can save you from a repair bill that has nothing to do with why you needed the tow in the first place.
